There are many ways that people try to rid themselves of accountability and this feels like one of them. It's not an overt, “It wasn’t me!” proclamation of innocence to deter any thoughts of guilt from onlookers. It's subtle. And subtlety has a conniving way of slithering its way to successfully drape an invisibility cloak over otherwise obvious red flags. Sly can be just as effective, if not more, than obvious.
