Thankfully, I don't see this in my current managerial structure, but in past companies I saw sooooo much of this. The people at the top were just good at the art of BS and didn't actually do much work – it's awe-inspiring as I could never! Hah! But you are absolutely right that no one just 'recognises' how much you do. It is very much not a meritocracy.
